2008 Loose Records
The Loose Records Project was a combined effort of The Alabama Department of Archives and History and the Genealogical Society of Utah (now FamilySearch) to work with each Alabama county to preserve loose court records, primarily probate records. Tuscaloosa County probate records had previously been filmed so volunteers began working with Circuit Court Clerk, Doris Turner, to prepare archival folders for divorce cases. Estate cases were found and permission was obtained to include those records for filming.
The papers were opened, cleaned, and flattened to go into folders. The files were read and names in the file were added to the folder and an index was prepared. The folders were microfilmed. Fifty rolls of film were given to Probate Judge Hardy McCollum and to the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The county film collection is housed in the Tuscaloosa Public Library with a printed index pointing to the film number and case file.
The films were digitized and now the images are found on a DGS number. The 2008 index was updated in 2022 to include the DGS number and image number where each name is found. Search the FamilySearch catalog for the DGS needed and enter the image number to find the correct folder. When signed in to your free FamilySearch account, all images in the folder can be viewed. If you are interested in linking these images with each name, contact Jan Hutchison.
