Cemetery Work

Hope City Church Cemetery (Formerly Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery) | Located on University Blvd near Holt and Alberta City

Currently our 2nd Vice President, Ricky D. House Jr. is working with some of his family along with help from The Marine Corps League of Tuscaloosa to clear off an existing portion of the cemetery that had been allowed to grow uncontrolled for many years, covering a number of marked graves. The project was started in March of 2024 and is expected to continue until it is complete. There is a photo album in the Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society | Facebook Group with many pictures showing the progress of work. A more in-depth write-up on this project will be added to the website once the project nears completion.

Hope City Church Cemetery (Formerly Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery) Update | 27 Oct 2024

We were out at the cemetery from 7 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Saturday 26 Oct 2024. We had the tractor back out there to help as well as a forestry mulching attachment for a skid steer. We also found another 2 ledger stones/box tombs but I wasn't able to get pictures yet. They still need some work to fully clean the tops off. We will soon be looking at getting some fill dirt brought in to level out the graves, burrows, tree stump holes, etc. I'll also start working on getting these headstones leveled and repaired but that probably won't be until after winter. I know everyone is going to be thrilled with this progress like we are.

We couldn't have gotten all this done today without the help of:

Marine Corps League of Tuscaloosa-Johnny Michael Spann Detachment #1272
Caleb Herndon(owns and drove the skid steer, Herndon Excavating & Land Clearing)
My Dad-Ricky D. House Sr
My Brother Michael House and my Nephew, Gideon House
Tim White-My 1st cousin 1x removed's Husband.
Joe White-My 2nd cousin and Tim's Nephew

Walker Cemetery (Old Boys Colony Cemetery) | Located in Munny Sokol Park in Northport

Mike Simmons with his family and his group, Tuscaloosa County C.R.P.T. Keepers | Facebook Group along with members of the UA Archeology Cemetery team, Tuscaloosa County P.A.R.A. and other programs were at the cemetery on Wednesday October 16th, 2024 to remove dead trees and fallen debris, cut underbrush and research fallen and buried stones. We will post updates as we receive them.

Walker Cemetery (Old Boys Colony) Update | 23 Oct 2024

From Mike Simmons: "We've had a great week at the Walker Cemetery (Old Boys Colony at Munny Sokol Park). During the cleanup and tree cutting, we found two buried memorials and a couple of previously unknown stones. This cemetery now has three confirmed generations (Robert Walker, Moses Pierce Walker, and William Walker) along with spouses and siblings. It's been great fun and I greatly appreciate the work of the UA Archeology Group and the help from the people at the United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama. Thank you all so much, it's going to look great!" For photos please visit Tuscaloosa County C.R.P.T. Keepers | Facebook Group. (Update provided by Mike Simmons)
