Meetings



Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month except for January and July due to the holiday in each of those months. Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa County Synergic Center located at 3500 5th St. Northport, (note the map below) unless otherwise noted. The meeting location will be announced here on our website as well as in our Facebook group if it changes.

PROGRAM: Life of Pushmataha


PRESENTER: Chuck Gerdau | 6:30 p.m.


Chief Pushmataha (1764 - 1824) was a Choctaw leader who fought in wars against the Creeks and British. He was also a skilled negotiator with the U.S. government.
As a young warrior, he fought and was key to a battle ca. 1782 between the Choctaws and Creeks at the banks of the Black Warrior River at Northport.

Early life:

Born in 1764 near the Noxubee River, which is near present-day Macon, Mississippi
He was a fearless warrior and charismatic leader

Warfare:

Fought against the Creeks, Osages, and Caddos
Led Choctaw forces in the War of 1812 and the Creek War of 1813-14

Negotiations:

Negotiated treaties with the U.S. government
Negotiated the Treaty of Mount Dexter in 1805 and the Treaty of Fort St. Stephens in 1816
Negotiated the Treaty of Doak's Stand in 1824

Death:

Died in Washington, D.C. on December 24, 1824
Buried with full military honors in the Congressional Cemetery at Arlington

PROGRAM: We will meet for a planning meeting regarding the 50th Anniversary of the Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society


PRESENTER: Group Discussion | 6:30 p.m.

Discussion items will include:

Who - to invite (former members, charter members, dignitaries)
What - kind of program to hold (guest speaker, topic, etc.)
Where - to hold the meeting
When - December 4, 2025 (morning, mid-day or evening)
Why - to celebrate 50 years of organized genealogy in our area



     


     We also offer the ability to attend our evening meeting by Zoom, with the exception of December due to there being a Christmas Party and no actual business meeting or program held and there are no meetings in January or July due to the holidays. The Zoom details are posted on the day of the meeting in our Public Facebook Group.
